Professional Practice
What is a Medical Herbalist?
As a medical herbalist and member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy, I am trained in both conventional medical knowledge, including clinical examination and diagnosis, alongside the therapeutic use of plants. Medical herbalists typically undergo extensive education, training at degree level and over 500 hours of clinical practice to obtain a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology, in addition to an in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants and herbal prescribing.

Preparations in a prescription include teas, with the active constituents being extracted in hot water, tinctures, with the constituents extracted in alcohol and capsules, where the dried herb is digested in the gut. All of these preparations can include the combination of different herbs to facilitate an individualised treatment and different preparations can be combined for a broader effect.
Medical herbalists are happy to work in collaboration if required, with other healthcare practitioners, such as doctors, to ensure integrated and safe care for their patients. As a medical herbalist, just like any other healthcare professional, patient confidentiality is paramount.
The Consultation
In a consultation, a patient's health conditions will be discussed in detail, assessed (including a clinical examination if necessary) and an individualised treatment plan devised. Factors such as medical history, family history, lifestyle and specific symptoms and all body systems will be discussed to lay the foundations for a holistic approach to healing. This may involve recommending herbal preparations like teas, tinctures, capsules or creams as well as offering dietary and lifestyle advice to support an overall return to wellness.

2-4 weeks later we would arrange a follow up appointment to see how things are progressing, make any necessary adjustments and prescribe more herbs if appropriate.

Consultations are usually held in person to allow for a clinical examination, but in some cases they can be conducted virtually.
